  • E-marketing Basics: Pro And Cons Of Hour Targeting

    E-marketing Basics: Pro And Cons Of Hour Targeting

    One of the main advantages of advanced internet technologies is the possibility of an hour targeting for ads served website sites.

    Exactly how such targeting is done, that is a tech issue far beyond our e-Marketing topic. What is important to us, e-Marketers, is to be aware of this facility web servers have and use it towards making online campaigns more efficient.

    Hour targeting is especially useful when:

    • we already know the online buying habits of our target;
    • we want to create an association between our products and a certain time of the day when interest might be higher;
    • we try to avoid a certain category of customers that are known to be more active at a certain hour interval;
    • we know from previous researches that sites where we are advertising have different categories of visitors, with different interests and behavior, active at certain hours.

    Let us try to imagine some examples of justified hour targeting:

    • Premium IT products (such as laptops) could probably use business hours targeting, on the premises that active, working professionals have more buying power. Off-hours and weekend targeting could be used when promoting basic desktop systems with a lower price to a younger audience with less buying power and/or buying decision.
    • FMCG products might benefit from targeting ads within hour intervals when these products are more likely to be utilized. We would probably want to place ads for coffee on news-delivering web sites during the morning hours; and advertising creams and gels for muscular pains later in the afternoon or evening, when such pains are more likely to occur.
    • It is widely known that surfers using a dial-up connexion get online in the evening and at night. Therefore, if we are to promote services or products destined to dial-up users (modems, access cards, offers to switch to a superior connection) it only makes more business sense to target late hours.

    A banner for a banking product placed on a business portal would not need hour targeting, as professionals visiting such portals usually have permanent internet connection whether it is at the office, at home, or is using a mobile solution. A regular reader of the Financial Times online might opt to access the site in the evening, from the comfort of his home, long after the regular “business hours”, and would be a missed target if we employ hour targeting.

    To conclude, hour targeting for online campaigns makes a very powerful and efficient tool, but needs to be performed after carefully assessing surfing and buying behaviors of the visitors on web sites where we advertise.

    Interesting enough, such hour targeting is not always successful.

  • The e-Marketing Plan – Brief Overview and Working Scheme

    The e-Marketing Plan – Brief Overview and Working Scheme

    I. Summary of a marketing plan
    The marketing planning (concretized in the marketing plan) is an essential organizational activity, considering the hostile and complex competitive business environment. Our ability and skills to perform profitable sales are affected by hundreds of external and internal factors that interact in a difficult way to evaluate. A marketing manager must build an image and understand upon these variables and their interactions, and must take rational decisions.
    Let us see what do we call a “marketing plan”? It is the result of the planning activity, a document that includes a review of the organization’s place in the market, an analysis of the STEP factors as well as a SWOT analysis. A complete plan would also formulate some presumptions on why we think the past marketing strategy was successful or not.

    The next phase shall present the objectives we set, together with the strategies to achieve these objectives. In a logical sequence, we will further need to evaluate the results and formulate alternative plans of action. A plan would consist in details of responsibilities, costs, sales prognosis and budgeting issues.
    In the end, we should not forget to specify how the plan (or plans) will be controlled, by what means we will measure its results.
    We will see how to build the marketing plan, what is its structure: after we will see how to build the traditional marketing plan, we will take a look at the e-marketing plan and see how the unique features of the internet will require some changes in the approach of writing a marketing plan
    Before we continue, we must understand and accept that steps of the marketing plan are universal. The differences you meet from a plan to another consist in the degree of formality accorded to each phase, depending on the size and nature of the organization involved. A not diversified and small company would adopt less formal procedures, because the managers in these cases have more experience and functional knowledge than the subordinates, and they are able to achieve direct control upon most factors.
    II. The general marketing plan.
    The classical marketing plan would follow the following scheme of 8 stages:
    Declaring the mission: this is the planning stage when we establish the organizational orientations and intentions, thus providing a sense of direction. This is a general presentation of the company’s intentions and almost has a philosophic character.
    Establishing current objectives: it is essential for the organization to try to determine with preciseness the objectives to be reached. These objectives, in order to be viable, must be SMART.
    Gathering information: this stage is based on the concept of marketing audit. After performing the audit of the macro-environment by analyzing the STEP factors (social, technological, politic and economic), we should turn the focus upon the immediate external environment (the micro-environment) and analyze the competitive environment, the costs and the market. Finally, we will conclude with the SWOT analysis, by this way we will have a general view upon the internal environment compared to the external one. The SWOT analysis combine the two perspectives, from the inside and from the outside, because the Strengths and the Weaknesses are internal issues of an organization, while the Opportunities and Threats come from the outside.
    Re-formulating objectives: after the close examination of data gathered in the previous stage, sometimes it is needed to re-formulate the initial objectives, in order to address all the issues that might have come up from the previous stage. The distance between the initial objective and the re-formulated objective will be covered by appropriate strategies. We must ensure the re-formulated objective is SMART as well.
    Establishing strategies: several strategies are to be formulated, in order to cover the distance between what we want to achieve and what is possible to achieve, with the resources at our disposal. As we would usually have several options, we should analyze them and chose the one with more chances to achieve the marketing objectives.
    Plan of actions: consists in a very detailed description of the procedures and means to implement the actions we want to take. For example, if the strategy implies a raise in advertising volume, the plan of actions should establish where the advertisements will be placed, the dates and frequency of the advertising campaigns, a set of procedures to evaluate their effectiveness. The actions we plan to take must be clearly formulated, measurable, and the results must be monitored and evaluated.
    Implementation and control: consist in the series of activities that must be performed in order to run the marketing plan in accordance to the objectives set by the marketer. At this stage, it is critical to gain the support of all members of the organization, especially when the marketing plan is due to affect the organization from its grounds.
    Performance measurement: constitutes the last but not the less important stage of the marketing plan, since we can achieve only what we can measure. In order to measure the performances achieved through the marketing plan, we need to constantly monitor each previous stage of the plan
    The marketing plan that has a feedback cycle, from 8th stage back to the 4th. That is because sometimes during the planning process, we might need to perform stages 4 to 8 several times before the final plan can be written.
    III. The e-marketing plan.
    The e-marketing plan is built exactly on the same principles as the classical plan. There is no different approach, but there might be some formal differences given by the uniqueness of the internet environment. Many of these differences come from the necessity to ensure a high rate of responsiveness from the customers, since the e-world is moving faster and requires faster reaction from its companies, compared to the traditional offline marketplace.
    Even though it is perfectly acceptable and is a common practice to use the 8-stage classic model for the e-marketing plan as well, you might want to consider the simplified version proposed by Chaffey, who identifies four major steps to build the e-marketing plan:
    Strategic analysis: consists in continuous scanning of the macro- and micro-environment. The accent should fall on the consumers’ needs that change very rapidly in the online market, as well as on surveying the competitors’ actions and evaluating the opportunities offered by new technologies.
    Defining strategic objectives: the organization must establish and have a clear vision if the media channels will complement the traditional ones or will replace them. We must define specific objectives (don’t forget to check if they are SMART!) and we must also specify the contribution of the online activities to the organization’s turnover.
    Formulating strategies – we do that by addressing the following essential issues:
    develop strategies towards the target markets;
    positioning and differentiating strategies;
    establish priorities of online activities;
    focus attention and efforts on CRM and financial control;
    formulate strategies for product development;
    develop business models with well-established strategies for new products or services, as well as pricing policies;
    necessity for some organizational restructuring;
    changes in the structure of communication channels.
    Implementing strategies: includes careful execution of all necessary steps to achieve established objectives. It could refer re-launching of a website, promo campaigns for a new or rewritten site, monitoring website efficiency and many more.
    Note: a common strategy to achieve e-marketing objectives is the communication strategy. The steps to build a coherent communication plan will be presented within a further article.

  • Affiliate Marketing Advice That Everyone Should Follow!

    Affiliate Marketing Advice That Everyone Should Follow!

    A strategy that businesses use for growth is affiliate marketing. For those who have never used affiliate marketing, there are some things to know before applying it to your business.

    Be sure to write quality content and then enhance it with affiliate links. Consider your affiliate links as resources for your clients that will make it easy for them to purchase the product or service you sincerely recommend. If your review of the product is shallow and makes it clear that you don’t really have personal experience with the product, no one will click on your links – no matter how many you post!

    Avoid using affiliates that require you to pay them. You should also avoid any affiliate that requires you to purchase their product before you become an affiliate.

    When promoting your affiliate products, take it easy on making bold claims that you can not back up. Customers are eventually going to find out if you’re lying about benefits of the product. You may be on the hook to the actual affiliate company when they receive complaints about their product not performing as advertised.

    To get more revenue out of your affiliate marketing program, try to include a link to your products in your e-mails or newsletters that you send to regular customers. When you send news of new products or special offers, make sure that link is in the e-mail. You may be surprised how many clicks it gets!

    When choosing a topic for your affiliate marketing-driven website, pick something that appeals to the broadest audience. For example, everyone asks “how do I” or “how can I” all the time, so the website offering articles with advice on completing a variety of projects will reach the broadest audience. You can also specify that it’s home repairs, upgrades or organic recipes for food and cleaning supplies, to catch an audience more specific to the affiliate marketing links you may be using.

    When joining an affiliate marketing program, make sure the company that makes the product you’re promoting is legitimate. One way to tell the legitimacy of a company is by the terms of their return policy and how well they honor that policy. Being connected with a reputable company will boost your credibility; being connected to a shady company will hurt it.

    A great tip for affiliate marketers is to create an e-book of your products. This will add value and distinguish you from the other companies with your new customers. Creating an e-book is easy and is a great way to improve your business by attracting new clients.

    Furthermore, businesses use the affiliate marketing strategy for growth. Affiliate marketing draws more customers to businesses, which in turn creates more profit. We all know that it depends on your products and affiliate program, but that doesn’t mean that you should neglect your website. Take some time to better your online presence and better your affiliate marketing strategy.

    Ask an affiliate program for references. A reputable company will give you links to websites who are profiting off their partnership. Realize that you are never done in improving your marketing methods. In the world of affiliate marketing, there is ALWAYS something new coming along that can increase your click throughs, drive more visitors to your site or improve your analytics. You can put it to use the next time you check on your site. As you learn your note taking skills, you can begin to produce campaigns from your ideas.

    If they are willing to trade back-links, find websites that share similar topics to yours and ask. The better quality of the websites that link back to your content, the higher your Google Page Rank will be. Increasing your unique visitors will always increase your affiliate sales.

    Double check all your affiliate marketing campaigns as often as possible so you can remove any programs that aren’t working for you and concentrate on those which are creating income. This will create even more profit by increasing the number of links and amount of relevant content to the company, the result being increased sales.

    One good way to evaluate a potential affiliate marketing partner is to examine the material they give to potential customers, such as their sales letter. You can learn a lot about an affiliate by seeing how they treat their customers. Think of yourself as a customer and ask yourself if the affiliate is someone you would buy from.

    Delegate as many affiliate marketing tasks as possible if you have a large budget. By using other people to do the boring, repetitive tasks involved in affiliate marketing, you free up your own time which you can use to work on new marketing strategies and approaches and research new affiliate products, services and programs.

    It’s true that your website should triumph on its own based on its appearance and your services and products. That said, you can take it further by marketing through affiliates. • Is Google’s AdSense Affiliate Marketing?

    Is Google’s AdSense Affiliate Marketing?

    Affiliate marketing refers to a method of marketing, selling and advertising products on-line through an affiliate program where a webmaster joins in with a merchant to sell their product. It is a highly efficient, yet cost-friendly way to create both awareness and sales of a particular website, brand or product.

    The affiliate (or publisher) will either display adverts, or make use of blogs, rss feeds, emails or other means to either refer to the merchant’s product, or at least provide exposure to the merchant that will benefit both parties.

    The benefit the affiliate receives is a commission or revenue-based payment for every sale that has come through the affiliate’s website.

    Affiliate marketing started just four years after the world wide web was birthed (1994) and many popular and successful e-commerce websites owe a large part of their success to the program (namely, Amazon.com and others.) Affiliate marketing, however, should not be confused with multi-level marketing, although many multi-level or network marketing companies do make use of a similar method for on-line marketing. Google’s AdSense is also not considered Affiliate Marketing (though, it is an example in some sense) because it makes use of contextual advertising.
